Technical Support at Canadawired

After taking some courses at SFU, it was the height of the dotcom bust, I was desperate to gain work experience in my new chosen field, to prove that I was not a failure, and had not made the wrong leap.

I have fond memories of working with Rakie Kamara and Keesub Yun, they worked hard and had a good sense of humour.

My boss Gilbert Paik was a character. He is bursting with energy and life, a dynamo who had graduated from Caltech, buddies with Terry Chay and also knew the people that created Hotmail.

I learned a lot about unix, apache, php when working at Canadawired, the basics of LAMP that would serve me well for many years to come.

I can never forget the time that I managed to bring down the mail server that served hundreds of residential customers during my first week at Canadawired. I thought I would get fired, but Gilbert runs into the office and congratulates me!

He was happy that I was willing to try things out. What a great learning philosophy. Whatever is broken can be fixed, and don't be afraid of trying things.

I learned PHP with his encouragement, and built an issue tracking software, that was continued to be used at Canadawired.

The idea of "distributions"

The idea of "distributions" and "projects" doesn't appeal very much to me, at least if I am not sure that after installing that distribution I still have a standard Drupal installation with which i can do whatever I like. This is why I have never considered Open Publish or Tattler, at least not for flexible projects that need customization. Perhaps if I had one specific project (like an online journal) and I found a perfect distribution for my project I would use it, but not as a customizable solution for a varied community...
